This is one of the many classic romance movies, however this heart warming film stars the charismatic Ryan Gosling who can easily make any film romantic and beautiful. The first two minutes do not reveal anything about the film except from some of the characters. there is a young man rowing a boat alone while there is a sun set with a very vibrant red colour that instantly presents the theme of love. The first shot of a character who is not the mysterious boat man is and over the shoulder shot of an old woman in a blanket suggesting she is very frail and perhaps ill. There is then a long shot allowing the audience to see who the woman is. there is then a close up shot as the woman is in focus however there is a woman in the door way who is out of focus who starts to talk to the original woman "come on sweetie, lets get you ready for bed" the fact that she is a nurse concludes that the woman is ill or very old.
There is very quite non diegetic music playing that is very calming and relaxing that compliments the rowing and the establishing shots of the lake. The only diegetic sound is of the nurse talking to the woman. which creates a very calm start to the film and gives the audience time to appreciate the setting etc.
The film has an age rating of PG 13+ and therefore there are no sex scenes however the director manages to create that romantic sexual nature between the characters. I thing the average age range of this film is 13- 20 as it is very well known and popular for being one of the best romance films ever!
